About

Karen Van Holm is a visual artist based in Ghent, Belgium. Originally trained as a geographer and environmental scientist, she left a professional career in IT to fully devote herself to her practice as a graphic designer, illustrator, and painter.
She studied fine art in New York, Antwerp, London, and Los Angeles, and attended St Lucas Academy in Ghent over several years.
In 2020, she created a portrait of her hometown: a meticulously hand-drawn map of Ghent composed of more than 150 detailed drawings of its distinctive buildings. The undertaking culminated in a successful crowdfunding campaign that attracted significant media attention and brought the project to a broad public.
Her Natura series—encompassing collages, drawings, paintings, and hybrid works—marks a shift from the man-made to the organic. The works explore natural land- and seascapes, plants and animals, the classical elements, and internal body organs.
In recent years, oil paint has become her primary artistic medium.
